A half-naked man fled from police sent to arrest him.

Now Warren Kafanke has been given a suspended jail sentence for escaping from police officers.

Leeds Crown Court heard officers went to a house in Arnold Street, Birkby, looking for Kafanke on November 11.

His girlfriend opened the door and denied knowing where he was.

Mehran Nassiri prosecuting said when the officers asked to search the property she stood aside and at that point Kafanke came downstairs wearing only a T shirt. He explained he had already arranged to attend a police station with his solicitor but the officers told him he was under arrest on suspicion of burglary.

He asked if he could get dressed but when the officers began to follow him upstairs he took exception to that and returned back down. His girlfriend said she would collect his clothes and handed him their child while she did so.

Kafanke had his back to the front door but suddenly moved forward, put the child down and ran out of the house still undressed. The officers gave chase and caught him within a short distance when he became violent.

No further action was subsequently taken on the burglary allegation.

Adam Birkby representing him urged the court not to jail him immediately given the exceptional circumstances.

Kafanke, 24, admitted escape and was given four months in prison suspended for 12 months with 20 days' rehabilitation requirement and 60 hours unpaid work.
