FREE insulation is available in Kirklees for people over 60 on low incomes.

Those with a gross income of less than £20,000 a year could be eligible for free cavity wall and loft insulation through the Keep Warm scheme.

The scheme, run by Kirklees Council with Scottish Power, is for homeowners and tenants in private rented accommodation.

Research has identified that cavity wall insulation can reduce annual heating bills by about 35%.

Coupled with loft insulation, annual heating bills can be slashed by half.

More than 1,600 homes had free energy- saving measures installed in the scheme's first year.

To qualify for the scheme you need to be a permanent resident of the house and pay council tax to Kirklees Council.

Every property has to be surveyed to see what measures are required.

Depending on the construction of the property, eligible householders are offered free loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and a lagging jacket for hot water tanks.
