WE’VE had a month of winds, rain, frost and even sleet.

But May finally burst into a touch of summer in Huddersfield yesterday, as the town recorded its warmest day of the year so far.

And the good news was that the hot, sunny weather will continue for today – even though it will turn slightly cooler towards the weekend.

But it brought welcome relief to many, shivering in below-average temperatures and struggling to cope with a month’s rainfall in the first two weeks.

And it brought a smile to the face of young Harry Sullivan, of Upper Cumberworth, as he was one of many who enjoyed ice-creams in the heat.

The temperature reached an almost-sizzling 22 deg Celsius or 72 deg F.

Salendine Nook weatherman Paul Stevens said: “We’ve finally got a spell of warm days and yesterday was the warmest of the year so far.

“By mid morning it had topped 17 deg and it rose to 22 deg by the afternoon.

“The good news is we should have more of the same for today but for tomorrow and Friday, it will turn a little cooler although still staying dry and sunny.

“That looks the same for the weekend, both here and at Wembley for Huddersfield Town’s big game.

“There’s also a warning to people to beware of the sun. It is quite strong and fair skinned people could burn fairly easily.

“Looking further ahead, there’s a chance of a return to cooler and rainy weather for the bank holiday weekend.

“And into the summer, it looks like we will have one or two good hot spells but also a lot of cooler, showery weather.”

The record-breaking rains of April have been followed by a soggy start to spring, with more than 60mm of rain falling in Huddersfield so far this month – the equivalent of the average for the whole month.

Temperatures so far have been two or three degrees below normal but Paul said the good weather of yesterday and today could push up the average to something approaching the norm for this time of year.
