KIRKLEES Council leader Mehboob Khan warned last night that sports centres, art galleries and museums could close.

Clr Khan forecast the latest round of Government spending curbs would be felt hard in Huddersfield and the rest of Kirklees.

Kirklees Council has been told it faces another 10% cut in Government funding – and that could add up to more than £30m which must be saved.

Clr Khan admitted it was grim news for the town.

“In Kirklees, until now, we’ve worked efficiently not to close a single library, children’s centre, sports centre or gallery.

“However, with this announcement it shows that the Government are not interested in protecting frontline services which give many people a good quality of life.”
