COMPUTER users who have invested in the latest wireless technology should make sure their equipment is secure.

The call comes after reports of a number of people being targeted by hackers.

Wireless technology means access to the internet can be gained without cables being attached.

Graeme Howard, MD of e-commerce company Budget EDI at the Media Centre in Northumberland Street, Huddersfield, said that if the proper security measures were not taken it could leave a computer open to hackers.

In one day four customers came to see him with the same problem.

Each of their computers was being infiltrated by strangers who had hacked in because the owners had not made sure they had made their machines secure by installing a means of encrypting information.

Mr Howard said: "You can buy wireless technology kits from computer shops, but often when people do it themselves they tend to forget to install the program which will encrypt the information.

"One man said he was on his computer when someone else appeared to take control and started typing at the same time as him.

"Someone working from another machine could wipe everything from your computer."
