MOST shops selling aerosol spray paint are breaking new laws, says a survey.

The new laws say shops should not sell such paint to children under 16.

But a West Yorkshire Trading Standards survey found that 70% of national, regional and local retailers in the county were willing to sell aerosol spray paint in a variety of colours and sizes to a 14-year-old.

Undercover tests by the consumer group - part of a crackdown on graffiti - found breaches in the system.

One retailer sold three 300ml cans in a `buy one get one free' deal in red, white and blue.

Martin Wood, trading standards chief officer, said: "These traders are fortunate that on this occasion formal action will not be taken.

"Advice will be given and further test purchases may well be carried out.

"This service is committed to the enforcement of its new powers under the Anti-social Behaviour Act.

"Future offenders may face court action and a fine of up to £2,500."

Clr Gerry Harper, chairman of West Yorkshire trading standards, said: "I am disappointed that the majority of traders visited were prepared to sell aerosol paint without question.

"These illegal acts do nothing to help the fight against anti-social behaviour."

A spokesman for the service said the cost of cleaning up graffiti in Kirklees, Calderdale, Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield areas was £1m a year.
