ASDA shoppers are being warned to check their hot water bottles after a customer experienced a potentially dangerous leak from one.

Newsome pensioner Jean Ellis filled up her hot water bottle to help ease the winter chill - only to wake up hours later in a freezing cold, soaking wet bed caused by the bottle's stopper falling off.

The 76-year-old, who suffers from arthritis, had to spend the next few nights sleeping on her settee, as her bed was soaked through.

She also had an unplugged electric blanket on the bed at the time. This had to be thrown out.

Jean said: "I wasn't hurt by what happened, just in shock because it could have been a lot worse.

"I am lucky the bottle had cooled down before I went to bed or I could have been scalded."

She is now warning customers of the Bradford Road store who have bought the £1.50 Cassandra make hot water bottle to check their purchases.

The stopper on Jean's bottle doesn't stay in properly and popped out when she put some pressure on it.

She said: "Some elderly people may not realise the risk and could be seriously hurt. I want people to know about my bad experience, because there could be a real health and safety issue."

Asda have responded to Jean's complaint and will send the bottle to be analysed when Jean takes it into the store.

An Asda spokeswoman said: "We are dealing with the complaint and will be in touch with Mrs Ellis as soon as we get the test results back.

"If we find there has been a fault with the product we will assess the damages accordingly. If the product is faulty then the company may recall it."
