AN eagle-eyed club secretary from Huddersfield has told how a spelling mistake alerted him to the possibility of an expensive scam.
David Union, of Outlane Bowling Club, was sent an official-looking letter from a German firm relating to the ‘Publication of companies and VAT Registration Numbers in the UK Corporate Portal 2013’.
It states: “As part of the changes to the EU economic package, obligating all companies to provide their VAT Registration Number...”
The application for the database entry in the UK Corporate Portal is addressed to companies, self-employed people, institutions and public authorities.
But David, a former official of the Conservative Party in Calder Valley, noticed the letter writer had misspelled ‘corporate’ arousing his suspicions and he contacted local police.
Sgt Dean Maddocks, of West Yorkshire Police, said he would be forwarding a copy of the scam – which could cost unwitting users more than £3,000 – to West Yorkshire Trading Standards.
