A WORK gang tried to charge a Shepley firm £6,000 for a tarmac job they led them to believe would cost just £30.

Police have today urged people needing tarmac work to approach reputable companies for quotes first and never agree to have work done by people who just turn up at the door.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "This tarmac gang told the firm the job would cost £30, but when it came to pay they claimed they had quoted £30 per square yard and told them the bill was £6,000.

"The firm refused to pay despite feeling intimidated."

The tarmac gang then left.

Sgt O'Sullivan added: "Never organise this kind of work with people who just turn up and give a verbal quote.

"Always seek written quotes from reputable companies."

The same tarmac gang is thought to have been operating in the Wakefield area over recent weeks.
