POLICE have warned that car washers who flag down vehicles on main roads in Huddersfield may be guilty of traffic offences.

The warning follows several reports of groups of men, women and even children in Huddersfield standing in the road and offering to wash windscreens.

Over the last couple of weeks several motorists have seen groups stepping in front of drivers at St John's Road, Birkby and at Fartown Bar, Bradford Road.

In some instances washers have been seen to "jump out into the road" causing vehicles to stop, so they can offer their services.

A police spokesman said the car washers could be committing an act of obstructing the public highway.

He said police would move them on if they were in danger or creating a hazard.
