A video showing the scale of last night's blaze on Saddleworth Moor has emerged.
It was broadcast live from the scene over the internet by Saddleworth News editor Stuart Littleford, who said the scale of the fire was 'absolutely astonishing'.
Crews raced to Greenfield at about 8.45pm after the fire erupted. It could be seen from miles around.
Pictures taken from the scene showed the flames lighting up the night sky.
Five crews spent hours monitoring and containing it, using 'defensive' measures.
It is believed to have burnt itself out early this morning and was not thought to have been started deliberately.
Representatives from United Utilities, who control the reservoir, and wardens from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) have also been at the scene assessing the damage, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The RSPB said the fire did not spread to the woods but more enquiries would be needed to be carried out to determine the full effect on wildlife.
