Motorists have been warned over a “danger” road in Mirfield after a young driver flipped his car in a freak smash.

Householder Mark Hanson, 41, told how the Vauxhall Corsa clipped the back of his son’s car and turned over onto its side, blocking the road for two hours.

The driver of the Corsa, thought to have only got the car two days earlier on his 22nd birthday, escaped unhurt.

Mark, who captured the drama on CCTV, described how the Corsa clipped the back of his son’s Renault Megane which shunted forward into the front of his BMW 320, bashing the parked vehicle several feet down the road.

The Corsa then flipped onto its side before coming to a halt.

Mark and his family rushed outside to help and a Rottweiler-type dog, thought to have been sat in the Corsa's front passenger seat, leapt out and fled.

Police and an ambulance were called but the driver did not require hospital treatment.

The smash happened in Wellhouse Lane at 7pm on Sunday.

Mark had just called home to see his son Liam and had left his BMW on the roadside, which he doesn’t normally do.

Mark said: “It was just a freak accident. I don’t know how he did it and he probably doesn’t know either.

“He wasn’t speeding and can’t have been doing 30mph. He just clipped the back of the car and turned it over.”

Wellhouse Lane is notoriously narrow with cars often parked at both sides of the road.

There is a school and a cricket ground nearby which add to parking problems at certain times.

Mark said the road was also used as a “rat run” by locals and as a racetrack by drivers and scooter riders.

He branded the road “dangerous” and added: “I assume this accident happened due to a momentary lapse of concentration.

“Luckily my family were all inside but it could have been very serious. It was a lucky escape for everybody.”

Mark said the dog bolted in fear and shock and the driver gave chase but returned minutes later. The dog is believed to have been unhurt and turned up back home.

Liam’s car could be written off and the BMW may have damage to the automatic gearbox. The road was shut for two hours.
