A MAN of 19 accused of raping a young woman told a jury they giggled when a passer- by saw them having sex and told them to "get a room".
Nathan Johnson, of Park Hill, Bradley, is alleged to have raped the 22-year-old woman - who cannot be identified for legal reasons - in the gardens of the town centre Huddersfield Parish Church last July.
Johnson told Bradford Crown Court the woman agreed to go into the gardens and have sex.
From the witness box he described how he and another man got talking to the woman and a friend outside a bus stop on Lord Street.
"She was all right. I was just chatting her up," he said.
He asked if she would come with him and she agreed. They talked and she asked for his phone number, saying said she had just finished a long-term relationship.
Johnson said that as they were having sex "there was a guy that walked past and said `get a room'. We both started laughing."
The court heard that the woman then told him to stop when she heard her friend calling her. She then walked off towards a nearby taxi rank.
Johnson said he "flipped" when the friend accused him of rape.
He said the alleged victim grabbed his hand and said: "It's all right, you haven't done anything."
Johnson denies a charge of rape.
The trial continues.
