Threatening letters saying ‘we are going to terrorise you’ have been sent to a woman who has a wind turbine on her land.

Police have confirmed they have launched an investigation.

And a reward of £500 has been offered to identify the author of the three letters, all written on postcards, which have been sent to the owner of Moortop Farm, Slaithwaite Road, Meltham.

The first two were sent after Kirklees Council approved the turbine last year. It was erected in June, and a third letter has now been sent to the land owner, saying: “We are going to get you back”.

Graffiti has also been daubed at the side of a driveway at the farm, which is in the greenbelt, saying ‘No wind turbines here’.

The turbine is owned by the Shepley-based company Windvest, which rents the land at the farm. The land owner receives free renewable power from the turbine.

Windvest managing director Dean Staveley said: “We have come across this sort of thing before, but have never seen letters as threatening as these.”

He said the third letter was particularly upsetting for the land owner, who has asked not to be named.

“It was really threatening, saying the nights are drawing in and we are going to get you back.”

Mr Staveley has put up the reward, and said security has been stepped up at the site.

The turbine, which stands 34.5m from base to tip, was recommended for refusal by planning officers when it went before councillors last year due to the ‘detrimental’ impact on the openness of the greenbelt and landscape, in particular the neighbouring national park.

But councillors went against officers’ advice, allowing it by seven votes to six.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police received a report of a malicious communication offence and are continuing to conduct inquiries.”
