POLICE have brought in a crack team to sort out Lepton.

Marauding youths have been angering residents, attacking buses and cars and causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Now, officers who are used to patrolling the streets of troubled Lowerhouses and Almondbury have been drafted in.

Insp Dave Barnett, of Huddersfield police, says a team of five or six are focusing on the area in the "teatime till bedtime" danger hours.

He added: "Community support officers and community beat officers have been diverted from other duties to concentrate on Lepton.

"We'll carry on patrolling in the village for as long as we think is necessary.

"The problem times are from teatime to bedtime, 9pm or 10pm. But our patrols are out a little later than that, too."

Insp Barnett wants parents of unruly youths to do their bit.

He asked: "Do you know what your son or daughter is up to?

"Many parents we meet are completely unaware that their children have been causing problems."

He said the Highgate Lane area had been very quiet since the weekend, and suspected some angry parents were keeping their teenagers at home after bus windows were smashed and cars were pelted with stones in a vandalism spree.

As a direct result, the Yorkshire Traction bus company has been boycotting the village centre after dark this week, running services only on Wakefield Road and Penistone Road.

Insp Barnett has had to find other officers to cover areas such as Almondbury and Lowerhouses, as officers put their energies into Lepton.

He says: "Some residents have been talking about turning vigilante and taking their own action against crime.

"They're as concerned about anti-social behaviour as we are. But I must urge them to leave the policing to us.

"The main thing is that they report any problems and we'll deal with it."
