A MARSDEN woman today urged cyclists to wear helmets after a lucky escape for her son.

Mrs June Bickerdike believes that without a helmet, her son, Stephen, could have been killed.

Mr Bickerdike, 35, suffered a broken arm and serious facial injuries when his cycle was struck by a car.

He was flung over the handlebars and taken to hospital.

Mr Bickerdike was off work for several days.

Mrs Bickerdike, of Mount Road, said: "Doctors told him that because he was wearing a cycle helmet it had saved him.

"He was very lucky - which cannot be said about other cyclists. It makes me shudder when I see cyclists not wearing helmets in today's traffic."
