All weddings are emotional occasions but this particular one contained more emotion than most.

Eleven months ago Samantha Nash suffered the agony of losing her 12-year-old nephew, Isaac, in a drowning accident off the coast of Anglesey an event which devastated her and her close-knit family and friends.

So on Wednesday, July 29, when she wed firefighter Will Basnett at the Pelion peninsula in central Greece, with 60 family members and friends including Isaac’s parents Adam and Zoe – one of five bridesmaids – the joyous event was tinged with sorrow.

Samantha, a vivacious 38-year-old mother-of-two who is head of prep and year 6 class teacher at Huddersfield Grammar School, said: “When I told Isaac we were getting married he was so excited he immediately began researching what he and his brother Xander and my eight-year-old son, Han Barden-Nash, would be wearing.”

Isaac decided on chino shorts, white shirts, blue Converse trainers and pink bow-ties.

Samantha said: “It was very emotional. We had our moments. I took with me a sea shell from Aberffraw beach and placed our wedding rings in it for Han to carry to us as we stood on the beach in the early evening waiting to say our vows.

“I wanted to get married on the beach by the Aegean Sea and that’s what we did. It was absolutely idyllic and so romantic.

“Later we had fireworks and there was Greek music which made everyone laugh as the first dance was Yesterday – the famous Beatles classic – which was not really appropriate!”

Among the guests were Isaac’s grandparents Suzanna Lewis and Howard Lewis, a recently retired West Yorkshire firefighter.

Will’s parents John, a retired police officer, and Kath were there too along with Will’s brother Adam, his wife Diane and their son Reuben.

Will, a former Salendine Nook pupil who now lives in Highburton, and who is based at Cleckheaton Fire Station, said: “We’ve had a fantastic time. It was amazing, absolutely amazing.

“We couldn’t be happier. Sam and I have been together for three years now and we’ve never looked back.”

Later this month the happy couple will host an evening party for 200 family and friends at The Foresters Arms, Cumberworth.

And at the end of the month Isaac will be very much in their thoughts again when the family visit Anglesey, North Wales, to present the RNLI with a cheque for £10,000 in recognition of their involvement in the search for Isaac.

The Isaac Nash Trust has raised more than £100,000 since the tragedy with the hope of building a scooter park in Highburton in permanent memory of Isaac, whose body has never been found.
