SEVEN vehicles were involved in a pile-up during rush hour last night (Tuesday) on the M62 at Chain Bar.

One man was injured in the crash which involved a van, 4X4 vehicle and five other vehicles.

The accident happened when they crashed into each other on the junction 26 exit sliproad around 5.20pm.

Firecrews from Cleckheaton, Odsal and Bradford attended the scene.

The man was treated in hospital for his injuries.

Meanwhile West Yorkshire Police has issued a warning to all motorists to drive with extreme caution.

The force wide warning came as black ice affected many routes.

Police reported scores of minor bumps and shunts on the region’s roads with more than 50 on Wednesday morning.

Mark Dobson, unit manager for Kirklees highway said at least five of those accidents had been in Kirklees.

He said the gritting teams had carried out a full grit on priority routes at 6pm on Tuesday evening.

Night patrols reported snow showers between midnight and 1am causing the salt to be washed off the roads and black ice forming.

Mr Dobson said the gritting crews were out again during the morning putting salt on freezing surfaces. Morning rainfall falling onto freezing surfaces had led to black ice.

One of the authority’s wagon gritters had also crashed on black ice.

Mr Dobson said Kirklees was having daily supplies from Cleveland of salt and had enough to cope with the current conditions.

Better weather was forecast which would mean supplies could re-stock.
