HE was renowned for his service with a smile.

Now Gurmail Singh's family are hoping this new photograph of the shopkeeper will encourage people to help catch his killers.

The image was released today as the inquiry into the shocking attack on the popular 63-year-old father and grandfather reached its fifth day.

House-to-house enquiries are being carried out in the Cowcliffe area and forensics experts continue to gather evidence in and around Cowcliffe Convenience Stores, where Mr Singh was found in a pool of his own blood on Saturday night.

He had been bludgeoned at least nine times by a teenage gang armed with a hammer.

Police have set up a mobile van in the car park of the Shepherd's Arms pub on Cowcliffe Hill Road as a drop-in point for anyone with information.

Kirklees police's divisional commander, Chf Supt John Robins, said: ""The smallest detail about this incident or about those involved could help paint a bigger picture. I would encourage anyone who has any information or suspicions to come forward.

"This contact point will not only be an opportunity for local people to provide information, but an easy place for them to ask questions if they are concerned about anything.

"This is a very distressing time for the family and the close community around them. People often have issues that they would like to discuss and we realise that.

"I would therefore ask residents to use the contact point and to speak to their local neighbourhood policing team officers.

"They will be on hand to provide information about what is happening or who to contact if they are able assist in the enquiry.

"Clearly, we cannot enter into the specifics of what is an ongoing criminal investigation, but people may have individual concerns they would like to speak to the police about."

Senior investigating officer, Det Supt Dave Pervin said on Monday it was highly likely the four teenagers who stormed the shop on Saturday are from the nearby area.
