A GIANTS star is in a secure mental unit after a bizarre sequence of events left two men hurt.

Paul Whatuira was arrested early yesterday morning after two men were attacked on St Thomas’ Road near Folly Hall.

One was left badly injured with severe facial injuries.

Whatuira was stopped by police, restrained and taken to Huddersfield police station, but later taken to a secure unit in Bradford for an assessment on his mental health.

Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis said: "Paul and his family have the full medical support of the club available to them at this difficult time.

"The club is upholding its duty of care to provide the best possible environment to help Paul."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A 28-year-old man was arrested and later given police bail.

"He is undergoing a mental health assessment in a secure unit."
