A HUDDERSFIELD man who heads an Asian Christian group has welcomed a Government defeat in the Commons on a religious hatred Bill.

Christian groups from all over the country - including Asian Christians, who were led by Birkby man Yaqub Masih - were against the Bill.

He is general secretary of the UK Asian Christian Fellowship and an adviser to the Bishop of Wakefield.

He has been campaigning against the Bill and arranged three protests outside the Commons.

Mr Masih said: "The Bill would have caused a lot of problems if it became the law.

"I say this because there is a similar Bill in Pakistan called the blasphemy law. Under it, people generally misuse the law against each other for their personal vendettas.

"We had put our trust in God throughout this campaign and our prayers have been answered with this victory."
