FEARS for the welfare of 30 stray dogs confined in a boarding kennel spurred on council officers to shut it down.

Wakefield Council officers were worried about the health and safety of the animals housed at Oakenshaw Grange, Wakefield.

The kennels are owned by David and Janet Worrell, who also run Huddersfield’s Marina Kennels, which were closed down earlier this month because of essential work needed on the drains system.

A spokesman told the Examiner they were closing down the Wakefield kennels for a minimum of two weeks or until “required conditions were met”.

The dogs are taken to the kennels by Leeds, Kirklees and Wakefield dog wardens.

Kennel owner David Worrell said they had a vet come to the site to examine the dogs.

He said: “Once the vet has done his examination of the dogs I’m sure we will be able to reopen.

“I cannot say that there’s not a health and safety problem because I am not a health and safety person.

“The council officers thought there were a couple of stray dogs that were underweight and they had a bit of diarrhoea.

“They’ve come in to us as strays. We’ve not put them into that state. They’ve come here in that state.”

A spokesman for Wakefield Council said the kennels were closed because of health and safety issues.

“After the dogs were checked by the vet the kennel was reopened after the dogs were given the okay.

“We will be keeping a close eye on any further developments from now on.”

After Marina Kennels, off Leeds Road, Huddersfield, were closed recently because of problems with the sewer system, the 10 dogs there were relocated.

Work has began on sanitation.

Kennel owner David Worrell said that the kennels will re-open after generous offers of help.
