Parts of the Colne Valley have been plunged into darkness.

Residents living on streets in Longwood, Cowlersley, Milnsbridge and Golcar have all complained after being left without working street lights for months.

They outed their frustration on Facebook and demanded that Kirklees Council, in charge of repairing lights, take quick action.

John Slumbers, of Wood Street in Longwood, started the conversation in the Golcar, Milnsbridge, Longwood and Cowlersley community group.

Three lights on the road are not working.

He said: “Kirklees changed our street light’s to LED and they are (sic) great. A week later they don’t work.

“A month nearly and still we have no street lights.

“Reported it on a map on Kirklees website and called them. Still nothing.

“We have elderly people, single mums and young families on our street and three times I have challenged people loitering in the dark outside our house. We have had burglaries more than once this year and cars stolen. Not happy at all.”

Claire Dyson Binns, of Manse Drive on Cowlersley says three lights have also been out near her house have been out since late November.

Leigh-Ann Sykes said that Leymoor Road in Golcar had also been hit.

“There are a few out down Leymoor too which have been for sometime. I go running in an evening and I can’t see where I am putting my feet where some are out.

“It’s very dangerous.”

In Milnsbridge, Peter Michael Garwell said: “Lights on the junction of Armitage Road and Dowker Street have been out for two years.”

Wood Street, Longwood which has been without street lighting for some time.

All said they had reported the issues to Kirklees Council.

A spokeswoman said: “The council is aware of a number of streetlights that are not currently working.

“The heavy rainfall in recent weeks is resulting in a rise in the number of electrical supply faults affecting the council’s street lights, which causes them to stop working.

“Where these are caused by an electrical supply failure they are passed onto Northern Power Grid to repair.”

Northern Power Grid said it was aware repairs needed to be made on Wood Street.

A spokeswoman said they hoped to have had the repair fixed by January 8. She said: “The council informed us on December 21.

“We have had to delay work due to wet weather and flooding that has hit properties in the north, which has limited our resources.

“We have 20 days in which to respond to an issue.”
