COUNCIL equality chiefs have ordered an urgent review into `sexist' market place toilet charges following a one-woman campaign.

Madeleine Hicks, 39, took Kirklees Council bosses to task over the cost of a loo visit for women in Queensgate Market Hall, Huddersfield.

At the moment the fairer sex have to pay 10p, while men go for free.

Mum-of-two Mrs Hicks from Meltham said she had been told women had to pay to maintain the sanitary bins, but was then told ladies had to put their hands in their purses because they always had done.

Mrs Hicks said the council's tone changed after the Examiner got involved last Friday.

She added: "I got a phone call from a woman in the council's diversity team.

"She told me the markets manager had been given two weeks to equal things up, whether that be not charging the woman or making men pay."

Mrs Hicks said she was delighted at the news - but refused to take victory for granted.

She added: "If this doesn't work I have two options. I can go to the council Ombudsman or I can protest by using the gents to avoid paying."

Kirklees Council refused to comment.
