Plans have been submitted for a £100,000 skate park at Wellholme Park in Brighouse.
The application is good news for skateboarders who faced a setback when arsonists torched the current skate ramp in the town’s park in July.
Organisers behind the skate park have secured £50,000 already from Calderdale Council and are applying for grant funding from national organisations.
In the planning application they say: “The proposal for a concrete fixed skate park at Wellholme Park has arisen through interest from the local community, skate park users, children, park users and local residents.”
The new skate park will be constructed of concrete with design features picked by the people who will use it.
It will be located near to where the current skate park is, but will be separated from the nearby children’s play area.
The team behind the proposed new skate park includes the users and the 3Bs (Builder a Brighter Brighouse) community group.
The idea has received support, including that of Insp David Shaw from Calderdale police, who said the existing skate park and graffiti wall was well used.
He added: “This area will provide a safe haven for the youths within the community, giving them somewhere to go and something to do which in turn will deter anti-social behaviour.”
The application is open to public comments before a decision later this year.
