IS Huddersfield really more creative than Oxford and Cambridge?

A new discussion group will debate the point next month.

The Futurelaboratory trends research centre drew up a list of the top 20 most creative places in the country this month.

Huddersfield came 13th, three places ahead of Oxford and four in front of Cambridge.

The town ranked highly because of the new media and electronic innovation work taking place.

And now the new group will debate these findings in its first monthly meeting.

The Huddersfield Salon has invited two speakers to discuss the issue at Cafe Ollo at the Media Centre in Northumberland Street on October 8.

Charles Landry is a leading adviser on city revitalisation and has written several books on the subject.

In 1993 he advised Kirklees Council on its first cultural policy and was a board member of the Huddersfield Creative Town Initiative from 1997 to 2000.

He will be joined at the debate by Dr Paul Chatterton, a geography lecturer at Leeds University.

The salon will discuss happiness in November and multi-culturalism in December.
