THE EXAMINER has teamed up with Huddersfield's top singers and musicians to stage a charity concert next month.

The aim is to raise thousands of pounds for the victims of the tsunami disaster.

Six of the town's top choirs and two hugely-successful brass bands will join forces in the splendour of Huddersfield Town Hall.

The event, Huddersfield In Harmony, is the brainchild of New Mill Male Voice Choir.

It has received backing from the Examiner and Kirklees Council.

News of the event came as it was confirmed that the Examiner/Unicef tsunami appeal topped £30,000.

The total stands at £30,520.

Clr Mary Harkin, the Mayor of Kirklees, was delighted to add her support to the February 27 concert.

She said: "The council is more than happy to offer what help it can to raise funds for the victims of the tsunami disaster.

"The people of Kirklees have been touched by the terrible personal stories arising from the disaster. They want to do their bit to help and support the communities affected by this tragedy."

Examiner editor Roy Wright said: "People in Huddersfield have once again shown their support for people who are suffering.

"The public of Huddersfield are more than willing to work hard and do their bit whenever asked and I hope people will support this marvellous effort."

About 1,100 tickets, priced at £10 each, are to go on sale for the concert, which features the Male Voice Choirs of New Mill, Gledholt and Honley, ladies' choirs from Marsh, Honley and Vocal Expressions, and the renowned Sellers Band and the Hade Edge Brass Band.

David Marshall, vice-chairman of the New Mill choir, said: "It should be a fabulous occasion.

"There will be 300 musicians and singers and everyone is giving their services free.

"We believe it is going to be the biggest charity concert ever seen in Huddersfield."

* Tickets will be available from the town hall and from Tourist Information Offices.
