DRIVERS heading to work faced long delays after a main road was dug up.

Yorkshire Water staff set up temporary traffic lights at the junction of New Hey Road and Clough Lane in Rastrick at 8am on Sunday.

These were needed while they dug the road up to lay a new pipe to a nearby property.

The work was scheduled to finish on Sunday afternoon but it overran and the lights were still in place yesterday morning.

It caused traffic queues in all directions – back to Huddersfield Crematorium in Fixby in one direction and about half-a-mile up New Hey Road in the other.

A Yorkshire Water spokeswoman said: “The work is now complete and the traffic lights have been removed.’’
