ARCHIVISTS could be on the move.

The West Yorkshire Archive Service has been given approval to develop plans to move from its home in Wakefield.

The current building has been condemned by inspectors from the National Archives as not fit for purpose. The archive includes 12,000 volumes of deeds relating to property transactions in the West Riding between 1704 and 1970.

Clr Neil Taggart, chairman of West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee, said yesterday: “These records are of immense significance for people researching local and family history, and we must improve access to them as well as ensuring their safe and secure storage. We need a new building to do this, and will be seeking wide support for our plans during a series of public consultations beginning in September.”
