WEST Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is to recruit more on-call firefighters – to provide fire cover in areas including Holmfirth, Meltham and Slaithwaite.

On-call firefighters are paid to work part-time on a standby system, sometimes as a second job.

They must live or work within one mile of the fire station, or be able to reach their station within five minutes of receiving a call.

They can offer daytime, night-time and weekend cover from home or work.

This can be anything up to 100 hours per week, as well as attending a weekly training session.

There is an annual retained fee which varies from £2,136 to £2,848, depending on experience.

The firefighters are then paid between £9.76 and £13 an hour per callout or training requirement. On-call firefighters differ from whole time (full-time) firefighters, who carry out the role as their primary job and are based at a fire station.

WYFRS is not recruiting full-time firefighters. The following events will be held for anyone interested. Pre-registration beforehand is not required.

Featherstone Fire Station April 20, 10am-12pm;

Holmfirth Fire Station April 24, 1pm-9pm;

Ilkley Fire Station April 14, 10am-12pm, April 24, 10am to 12pm, April 25, 6pm -8pm;

Mytholmroyd Fire Station April 17, 6.30pm-9pm;

Meltham Fire Station April 23, 1pm -9pm;

Silsden Fire Station April 20, 10am-12pm.

Steve Rhodes, Area Manager Service Support, said: “This is an exciting job which requires a big commitment from you and your family.

“It is a very demanding role, both physically and on your time, and you will attend anything from road traffic collisions to moorland fires, but ultimately the satisfaction of serving your community makes it extremely worthwhile.”
