A ROGUES gallery has been launched online to help police crack crime in Kirklees.

These are the first pictures published on the West Yorkshire Police website as part of the force’s new Caught on Camera initiative.

They show people wanted for questioning over alleged offences including football hooliganism, shoplifting, criminal damage and making off without paying for petrol.

West Yorkshire Deputy Chief Constable David Crompton, said: “This system demonstrates just how important CCTV footage is in our fight against crime.

“A lot of incidents are captured on camera and this allows us to make use of these images in the most positive of ways.

“The site shows how West Yorkshire Police is continuing to make a real name for itself as a force that is committed in using the latest technology to become even more effective in tackling crime.”

Picture 1 shows a man wanted in connection with threatening and disorderly conduct on Market Street after the match between Huddersfield Town and Leicester City on October 4.

Picture 2 shows a suspect wanted for alleged criminal damage to a Renault Modus car on Acre Street near Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The damage was allegedly inflicted following an argument with the driver.

The picture, taken by a witness at the scene, shows a man described as 40 to 50 years old, 5ft 10ins and sturdily build with short salt and pepper hair. He wore a long-sleeved blue and white checked shirt.

Police say the incident happened at about 10.30am on September 6.

Pictures 3 and 4 show CCTV pictures of women allegedly shoplifting at a store on New Street in Huddersfield.

It happened about 5.30pm on October 8. Police say a “substantial amount” of clothes were taken.

Another alleged shoplifter was caught on camera in Picture 5 making off with items from a shop on Fernside Avenue, Almondbury, at about 7.40pm on September 14.

He is white, tall and skinny with dark hair and he wore a blue T-shirt.

Finally, Picture 6 shows a man wanted for allegedly driving off without paying after filling up at Birchencliffe petrol station on Halifax Road.

The force has already successfully trialled the Caught on Camera scheme on its internal intranet, leading to 570 suspects being identified in the last two years.

In one case a prolific offender who had evaded capture for several months was quickly identified.

As a result, he asked for 44 other offences to be taken into consideration.

In another, images of a suspect wanted in connection with a violent robbery at a supermarket led to a quick arrest.

Det Sgt Gary Howarth, from Crimestoppers, said he hoped making the scheme available online would encourage the public to become more involved in crime-fighting.

Anyone with information on anyone featured should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
