PLANS have been unveiled for a landmark building at the gateway to Huddersfield town centre.

Proposals have been tabled for an eight-storey building providing 8,000sq ft of shops, restaurants and flats at Aspley.

The site stands at the junction of Wakefield Road and St Andrew's Road.

It is now occupied by the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, which is planning to move.

The new building has been proposed by Wetherby-based CFK Developments.

CFK managing director Philip Cable said: "This development is in a fantastic position, close to the centre of Huddersfield and offering easy access to the town's bus and rail links and the national motorway network.

"It will be one of the first prominent landmarks that people see as they head into Huddersfield.

"It will make a statement about the levels of confidence, investment and regeneration that are quickly becoming synonymous with the town."

The building will comprise ground- floor shops and restaurants.

The upper floors will provide 88 one and two-bedroom flats.

Mr Cable added: "Once completed, it will become a vibrant part of the town for both businesses and residents nearby to enjoy.

"It will also act as a catalyst to attract further development in the area.

"There is plenty of demand for high-quality apartments close to the centre of Huddersfield.

"All the properties will be finished to a high standard and will reflect the contemporary environment and lifestyle that Huddersfield's regeneration programme is helping to create."

Eddie Rodgers, the chamber of commerce chief executive, said: "This development is the latest chapter in Huddersfield's transformation into an innovative residential and commercial centre.

"It will continue to create jobs, as well as building on the town's reputation as an investment hotspot."

Several sites are being considered for the chamber's new headquarters.

A spokesman said: "The chamber has a number of offices around Yorkshire and there are also some premises in Huddersfield which we are looking at.

"Whatever happens, we will retain a major presence in Huddersfield."

The chamber also has offices in Halifax, Wakefield and Barnsley.

CFK, which was founded in 2000, has carried out housing, retail, industrial and office developments in Leeds, Halifax and Barnsley.
