CRUEL thieves stole a disabled woman's wheelchair from her car.

It could be the thieves spotted the wheelchair in the back of Pauline Jenkinson's car at a Huddersfield supermarket and struck in broad daylight.

Mrs Jenkinson, 73, and her husband, 72-year-old Neville, went shopping at the Morrisons store in Waterloo on Friday, September 9.

The couple, who celebrated their golden wedding in March, live in Berry Brow and have five grandchildren.

Mrs Jenkinson suffers from osteo arthritis and osteo perosis.

She has also battled cancer recently and suffered from a blood clot on the lungs earlier this year.

At Morrisons, Mr Jenkinson opened the boot of their yellow Renault Scenic to get his wife's wheelchair out, but left it in the boot because she decided she would try to walk.

When they went shopping in Huddersfield town centre last Monday, they opened the boot and discovered the wheelchair had been stolen.

Mr Jenkinson said: "It may be that the thief took it while it was parked at Morrisons or sometime over the weekend when it was parked outside our house.

"It's a despicable thing to do and I couldn't believe it when I opened the boot and the wheelchair was gone. Clearly it is a vitally important piece of equipment for a disabled person."

The couple have now spent £200 on another wheelchair to replace the stolen one.

Anyone with information about the theft or knows where the wheelchair is cancontact Huddersfield police helpdesk on 01484 436659 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
