A SPECIAL rose to celebrate Yorkshire goes on sale today.

The white rose, designed by a University of Huddersfield student, is available from sports centres and libraries across Kirklees.

Clr Christine Stanfield hopes the people of Huddersfield will wear their roses with pride on Yorkshire Day on August 1.

The Lindley Lib Dem launched the competition after finding it hard to buy a white rose in previous years.

Laura Dobson, a BA surface design student at the university, came up with the winning design, which was unveiled at Huddersfield Town Hall last month.

Clr Stanfield said: “Laura’s rose is unique. Within the petals are images of the Pennines which makes it truly our rose.”

The White Rose of York (also called the Rose alba or rose argent), a white heraldic rose, is the symbol of the House of York and has since been adopted as a symbol of Yorkshire as a whole.
