GARDENER Mike England has found something strange in the undergrowth.

The New Mill man discovered a huge caterpillar in his fuchsias.

Mike, 71, said: “I’ve been gardening for 48 years and I’ve never seen one as big. I was quite amazed.”

The four-inch long brown insect has light markings on its head. Mike said: “They looked like eyes, it seemed like it was staring at me.”

Mike, who discovered the caterpillar on Saturday, has placed it in a bucket with a bed of cabbage.

He said: “It has a strange way of eating. It sends out a small trunk to gnaw at the leaves.”
