PLOT-HOLDERS have been recognised for their excellent allotment.
Kirklees Council judges decided Edge Lane allotments at Thornhill, Dewsbury, were the best in north Kirklees.
Station Lane in Birkenshaw came second and Ravensthorpe Road in Thornhill Lees was awarded the most improved prize.
David Hosley of the council’s culture and leisure services said: “The continuing fluctuations in the climate are a constant challenge to allotment holders but standards of entries were again very impressive.
“It has set a very high benchmark for all the sites in next year’s competition.
“The efforts and hard work of all the plot-holders throughout the district could be seen by the condition of the plots and produce.”
Clr Liz Smaje, the council’s Cabinet member for leisure, said: “Allotment gardening is really popular at the moment. We have seen increasing demand for plots from all parts of the community, with particular interest from women and young families.
“The council has allocated funding towards developing allotments across Kirklees. Site secretaries, plot-holders and interested parties are involved in shaping developments.”
Representatives of the winning sites will receive their trophies at Dewsbury Flower, Vegetable and Handicraft Show in Crow Nest Park on Friday, August 8.
