ICE and snow made several roads passable only with care this morning as the forecast cold snap began to take hold.

The A628 Woodhead Pass was closed from the Flouch Roundabout to the A57 because of ice.

And routes across the Pennines - including the A6024 Woodhead Road and A635 Greenfield Road - were both passable only with care.

Cold winds and sleet, rain and snow are set to batter the region for the next four days, with temperatures predicted to plunge below freezing across much of Britain.

National forecaster Brendan Jones said the weather would get worse between now and Thursday.

He said: "Across Britain today there will be sleet, hail, snow and rain falling, thanks to a narrow line of showers that is heading southwards. "There won't be a great deal of snow across England and Wales today, but the cold, wet weather is what to expect for the next few days.

"Yesterday temperatures were around double figures, but generally that will be between four and five degrees Centigrade today."

And Mr Jones said the temperature would continue to fall, dipping to between one and four degrees Centigrade tomorrow.

By Thursday many parts of the country will struggle to rise above freezing.

Meanwhile, there was good news for the 50,000 homes in Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire which were left without power after last week's storms.

All have now been reconnected and compensation is due for those affected.

Customers who have spent more than 48 hours without power are entitled of a refund of at least £25 from CE Electric, with an extra £25 for every subsequent 12-hour period.

A spokesman said: "Our job has been made easier thanks to the patience and support of our customers."
