A woman has been taken to hospital after a horror plunge from a Huddersfield town centre car park.

She is thought to have fallen more than 50 feet from the top floor of the Queensgate multi-storey car park into Alfred Street.

She is believed to have suffered serious multiple injuries.

The dramatic incident happened at teatime at the height of the rush-hour as hundreds of people were making their way home from work in the adjoining Queensgate Market Hall and town centre offices and shops.

Police sealed off Alfred Street as officers and Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics were called to the scene.

At one point, there were around a dozen emergency services vehicles surrounding the Kirklees Council-owned car park, which holds hundreds of vehicles.

It is believed the woman had driven a car in to the car park and made her way up several ramps to the top floor where she left the vehicle.

A police spokesman said: “We believes the woman is in her mid 20s and has either fallen or jumped from the top floor of the car park.

“A doctor was called to the scene to give emergency treatment before she was taken to hospital.”

The police cordon across Alfred Street meant that buses heading out of the town centre had to be diverted.

Some people took to social media to talk of an incident in the town centre.

The road remained closed well into the evening as police stepped up inquiries into the incident.

Officers stressed there were no suspicious circumstances.
