A BAKERY shop worker from Bradford who conned work colleagues out of thousands of pounds by telling them she was dying of cancer was given a suspended prison sentence.

A judge told 34-year-old Karen Marriott she had performed a "particularly wicked deception" and gave her a nine-month prison sentence which he suspended for two years.

He also ordered her to pay back almost £2,500.

Leeds Crown Court heard how Marriott, of Barham Terrace, told friends at Greggs bakery she had leukaemia and accepted hundreds of pounds they raised in a collection for her.

She also received cash from her employer's charity committee, had a loan written off by Greggs and was paid sick pay she was not entitled to.

Marriott pleaded guilty to the offences, which took place in January 2001, at previous hearing.

Judge Alistair McCallum told her: "What you did, especially to fellow employees, was a particularly wicked deception."
