A WOMAN badly injured in a crash at Kirkburton is critically ill in hospital.

The 57-year-old from Birdsedge is in the intensive care unit at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary following the two-car smash on Penistone Road near its junction with Thunderbridge Lane at 5.30am yesterday.

Her Ford Ka was in a head-on crash with a Vauxhall Corsa going the other way.

The man driving the Corsa escaped with slight injuries.

The smash happened on a right hand bend and there are reports the road surface may have been slippery before the accident.

The woman is thought to have suffered two broken legs along with head and internal injuries.

The road was closed for most of the morning while police accident investigation experts worked at the scene.
