A WOMAN died in a terror plunge from an M62 bridge.

She is thought to have hurled herself on to the busy motorway from railings on the landmark Scammonden Bridge.

The woman landed on the eastbound carriageway 120 feet below the bridge, which carries the Saddleworth Road over the motorway, late yesterday afternoon, watched by horrified drivers.

Police last night confirmed the woman, who has not been identified, had died at the scene.

One lane of the eastbound carriageway between Junction 22 at Rishworth and Junction 23 at Outlane was closed after the tragedy, at 4.25pm.

It remained closed for several hours while police and forensic experts conducted investigations at the scene.

Traffic on both carriageways was restricted to 40mph as police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service crews dealt with the incident.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We were called to reports that a woman had fallen from the bridge close to Scammonden Dam and had landed on the motorway.

“Police and ambulance crews were called but the woman had died.

“The motorway had to be partly closed to allow a full investigation to take place.”
