A woman screamed for help as she fought off a hooded sex attacker in the Lockwood area of Huddersfield early yesterday (Sat).

The woman was grabbed from behind as she walked down Chapel Hill at 2.50am.

The victim, aged 34, was set upon as she walked away from the town centre and across a grassed area near to Victoria Road.

Police said the woman was grabbed by a man wearing a hooded top which partially covered his face.

The woman screamed for help and a man came to her aid, forcing the attacker to flee.

Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, told how the woman was grabbed but managed to attract attention from a passer-by.

“The woman screamed and someone came to her assistance,” she said. “The attacker ran away.

“Physically the woman was unharmed and was seen by specially trained officers on Saturday and they will visit her again today (Sunday).

“Whilst in the early hours, there will still have been people who may have seen or heard something suspicious and I would appeal to them to come forward.”

Det Insp Wiseman said she wanted to speak to a man using a mobile phone and wearing headphones who was sat in a nearby bus shelter.

“I would particularly ask for that man to come forward as it is possible he may have witnessed the incident.

“Equally, there will still have been a number of people using taxis who may have passed this route and I would appeal to them to think back if they saw something.

“Any information, no matter how small it may seem in isolation, could be vital. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kirklees CID via 101, or alternatively via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
