A woman was found hanging close to a business premises in Huddersfield this morning.

The 35-year-old was discovered just before 6.30am near to the Broadway Hair Salon in Bradford Road, close to the Slubbers Arms.

Resuscitation attempts were carried out at the scene and she was taken to hospital where she is in a critical condition.

Amir Khan, 55, a Bradford Road resident who lives opposite the scene, said: "Apparently it was a woman who hanged herself, that's what I heard.

"She has been sitting in the doorstep by the takeaway for the past month. She was a very nice lady, never caused any trouble.

"She would always say 'hi' and one time when I spoke to her she said she liked to sit there and 'watch the world go by'.

"I would say she was in her late thirties to forties, very pleasant but obviously had problems.

"It's very sad that someone feels the need to do such a thing."

Yosief Bereket, 25, lives in the flat above the takeaway which was cordoned off.

He said: "I heard there was some accident but I don't know what. I got up this morning and opened my door to find I was cordoned off. Police won't tell me anything."

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 6.27am to Bradford Road, Huddersfield, where a woman was found hanged.

“The 35-year-old was taken to hospital and is in a critical condition.

“Investigations are currently ongoing as to the circumstances.”

Several police cars and an ambulance responder unit went to the scene.

Police taped off a large section of pavement at the front of a number of business premises.

A taxi driver at the scene, who did not want to be named, said police had told him that it appeared to be a suicide attempt.

Police were seen taking pictures of a jacket and a book which had been left on a doorstep.

The incident led to very slow traffic along the busy Bradford Road in both directions this morning.

All lanes were open, but drivers slowed down to take a look at the scene.

One bus passenger said she saw the resuscitation attempts as her bus went by just after 6.30am.
