A WOMAN passenger was badly hurt when a car slammed into a railway bridge.

The maroon Ford Mondeo hit the bridge at Huddersfield Road, Scout Hill, Dewsbury, at 1.30am today.

Firefighters from the nearby Dewsbury fire station were quickly on the scene.

The driver, a 38- year-old man, had already clambered from the wrecked car and had pulled his front-seat passenger out.

The 31-year-old woman from Batley, was seriously hurt.

The couple were taken to Dewsbury District Hospital.

A police spokeswoman said: "The car was travelling towards Dewsbury when it left the carriageway and collided with one of the stone-built bridge parapets.

"We would like to speak to anyone who saw the car on Huddersfield Road or the actual collision."
