A WOMAN who fell from a motorway bridge is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

The woman was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary after falling on to the westbound carriageway of the M62, near junction 26 at Chain Bar at around 10.15am yesterday.

It is not known if the woman fell or jumped from the bridge.

The lane in which she landed had already been closed for roadworks.

The M62 was closed in both directions so the Yorkshire Air Ambulance could land.

The closure caused tailbacks to junction 25 at Brighouse.

The motorway reopened at around 12.30pm yesterday.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to the incident at 10.17am to a report that a female had fallen off a motorway bridge.

“Both carriageways of the motorway were closed so the Air Ambulance could land.

“The motorway was reopened at around 12.30pm”.
