FOR every great man, there’s a great woman.

For Harry Bourne there are 30.

Harry, 85, is the solitary male member of the Golcar 5-0 Club, a social club for the over-50s.

He has been going to the club with wife Joan for 10 years.

They socialise with about 30 women who play bingo, hold bring-and-buy sales and go on trips.

Harry said: “When we first started there were three of us men, all called Harry.

“One of them died and another moved on. Now it’s just me on my own.

“I call the bingo numbers and keep them all in line. I enjoy it.”

Joan, 83, said: “He likes being there with all those women.”

The club, which took its annual trip – to Bridlington – last week, is looking for more male members.

Chairman Glenis Conway said: “I think there are more women on their own than men and I don’t think men are aware they can come.

“I don’t think Harry minds being the only man. We tease him about it sometimes, but we all get on.

“But we’d like more men.

“It might sound like we are all looking for a man, but we would just like to attract a bigger variety of members.

“It is a great way to get involved in a social circle, to speak to people and reminisce, to catch up with people you might not have seen for a long time and to make new friends.

“And I’m sure Harry would like a bit of male company every once in a while.”

Harry added: “Most of the time the women sit around and swap gossip. I don’t know why they come sometimes.

“It’s very difficult to get men to join any sort of club when they get to our age. For some reason they want to stay on their own.

“But they should just come and try it out.”
