A YOUNG driver and her passenger had a miraculous escape from a car crash at Holmfirth.

The Land Rover Discovery they were travelling in careered off the A635 road, smashed through a fence, dropped down a 10ft bank, hit a stone wall and rolled several times before coming to rest 236ft away from the roadside.

The accident happened just before midday on Sunday .

The driver, a woman in her 20s from Slaithwaite, was travelling to Huddersfield with her cousin, who was visiting from Scotland.

She had borrowed her parents’ Land Rover Discovery vehicle while they were away on holiday.

The 4x4 hit a dip in the road, which sent it out of control.

It veered onto the opposite carriageway and crashed through the fence.

The driver and her passenger, also in her 20s, were treated for minor injuries at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

However, two pet dogs which had been travelling in the 4x4 died after being flung from the vehicle as it rolled down the bank.

Pc Phil Shaw, of Huddersfield, said: “I was surprised there was nobody killed. You have to wonder how they walked away from that crash.

“It took place in an identical spot to where we had a fatal accident some time ago. The girls were very lucky.”
