WOMEN in Huddersfield are being urged to become part of the biggest female-only team in the UK.

Last year more than 5,000 women of all ages took part in Race for Life events in the town.

Now local ladies are asked to put their best feet forward and help raise thousands of pounds to help beat cancer.

Event organisers called for entrants as the country celebrated International Women’s Day.

They hope it will encourage mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends to ‘join the girls’ by entering the race.

It is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series. Women of all ages can walk, jog or run 5 kilometres in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Race for Life Huddersfield takes place on July 9 and 10 at Leeds Road Playing Fields.

So far more than 600 women have signed up, but organisers are hoping that 8,400 will enter.

They hope entrants will help smash last year’s fundraising total of almost £250,000.

Helen Webster, the charity’s Race for Life event manager for Huddersfield, said: “International Women’s Day focuses attention on women’s successes and highlights how much we can achieve together.

“We hope that the day will spur Huddersfield women on to enter Race for Life, where women unite in one cause, to help beat cancer.”
