HOLMFIRTH’S WRVS women know how much Jack Wood enjoys his weekly meetings of the over 60s social group.

After all, he’s the only man among 40 women.

Though he fought shy of our picture, the group are hoping to find some more male company for Jack as they approach their 60th anniversary.

The group was formed in 1949 - 11 years after the WRVS itself was formed in the Holme Valley.

Now the local group meets each Monday at 1pm at Holmfirth Methodist Church.

They enjoy bingo, speakers, quizzes and fundraising.

Beryl Crossland said: “We will be celebrating our 60th anniversary in two years’ time and hope to do so in style.

“We have 40 members and only the one man. Jack comes along with his wife Sheila and he’s quite happy, but we would like to see a few more men involved.

“The group is all about getting out and meeting new people, and we are always looking out for new members”.
