IT'S not too late to register for this year's Race For Life - run, walk or even stroll a 5km (three- mile course) to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Events take place during May and July at 150 places around the UK. Huddersfield supporters of what has become a high-profile charity event hit the start line in Greenhead Park on June 20.

Training sessions for the Huddersfield event have already begun but it's not too late to join in.

Models Nell McAndrew and Laura Bailey, and athlete Sally Gunnell are among those taking part nationally and it's hoped around 325,000 women will join them to try to meet the fund- raising target of £20m.

If you plan to take part, now's the time to start your training.

Dozens turned out for the first in a series of weekly training runs in Greenhead Park

Last year, 2,500 women and girls took part in the five-kilometre Greenhead Park event, raising more than £129,000 for the Cancer Research UK charity.

If you think you might be interested in getting involved in this year's event, turn up for one of the free training sessions to help you get in shape for the day.

Kirklees Council leisure development staff are holding training sessions in the park from 6pm to 7pm every Thursday.

Meet Louise Taylor at the pavilion next to the tennis courts each week for the nine-week programme leading up to the race.

"It is an ideal way of building up to being able to complete the course. It has also proved a great way to meet others who are trying to achieve something similar," said Louise.

The sessions include warm-ups, advice on running and walking for the race and motivation.

You can get an entry form from Tesco, Kirklees leisure development at the McAlpine Stadium, online at www.raceforlife.co.uk or on 08705 134314.
